Consumption

Being part of the golden age of comics, Action Comics was published at the height of the consumption. While comic Books are collectors items now, they were an industry at their height. The books were economic. Since the average reader read them, the average action comic had a cover price of 10 cents. Now-a-days an Original Action Comic #1 is worth 3.21 million USD. (Truitt 2014). The type of consumption, as seen with the price difference, has clearly changed and the so have the consumers for the product. While in the past the average reader partook in reading comics, the readers and collectors today are of a more fan based origin (whether it is of the characters or collect-ability of the actual books). The value of the comics today are not only of content but of monetary value. Advertising for the comics were simplistic. They advertised content and price often in relationship with each other.15-1

Children were the bulk of the consumes at the height of the golden age. The comic books were available at nearly every grocer and newsstand. A positive impact comics did have was the ability to get more children to not only read but to be excited about it. Despite the positives there is a growing skepticism against comics books for the same reasons. It will be explored a bit more in regulation but in short parents were weary of the “corruption of America’s youth” through these comic books (Weldon 2011). Regulation will later alter the fate of Action comics in the 1950s.
